Green Lakeland

June 4 to 6, 2022

The Finnish Lakeland is the largest lake district in Europe: a blue and green labyrinth of lakes, islands, rivers and canals. These waters offer wellbeing and activities all year round. Situated less than an hour from the Helsinki the Lahti region is the southernmost part of the Finnish Lakeland.

Lahti is the leading green city in Finland and a leader of environmental work. In 2021 Lahti was nominated as the European Green Capital. In February 2022 Lahti region was voted among the top 10 European travel destinations in the competition organized by the travel website European Best Destinations. In this voting Lahti was selected as the best sustainable tourism destination in Europe. In January 2022 the global news channel CNN included Lahti among the best destinations to visit in 2022

09:00 Visit to Salpausselkä Geopark Site
Salpausselkä Geopark Site, situated in the Lahti region, tells the story of the best-known geological entity of Finland. The First and Second Salpausselkä are unique ice-marginal formations laid down by the last Ice Age. They reach across the entirety of southern Finland and are at their most spectacular in the area of Salpausselkä Geopark. The Salpausselkä Geopark area is being developed to meet the criteria set for UNESCO Global Geoparks and will be included into the UNESCO Global Geoparks network in April 2022
Guided walking tour to Lahti Sports Centre
The Lahti Sports Centre is internationally known as the venue for the Nordic Ski World Championships and one of the most significant geological destinations in Salpausselkä Geopark. During the tour, you can enjoy nature within only about 1 km from the city centre and hear e.g. how the terrain with steep slopes has formed

Verla captures an interesting phase of development in Finland’s history and was named a World Heritage site due to its status as a unique and culturally and historically significant example of an industrial settlement from the turn of the 20th century

10:00 Departure to to Pulkkilanharju ridge. On the road we make a short stop (30 minutes) in the Old Vääksy village and Vääksy canal
The idyllic surroundings of the canal with cafés, restaurants and boutiques offers memorable experiences for the whole family. The Vääksy Canal connects lake Vesijärvi and Lake Päijänne. The canal was built between 1868-1871. The Vääksy Canal is one of the busiest recreational inland waterways in Europe and the most famous attraction of Asikkala
11:15 Visit to Pulkkilanharju – one of the most scenic sites of the Salpausselkä Geopark
The iconic Pulkkilanharju esker, cutting across Lake Päijänne, is one of the best known and most instagrammable sites of Salpausselkä UNESCO Global Geopark. The narrow 8-kilometre-long esker lies 32 kilometres from Lahti city centre and is an ideal day trip destination either by car, bus or by bike. The esker belongs partly to Päijänne National Park, which protects the valuable archipelago nature of Finland's second largest lake

Sustainable Travel Finland

Sustainable Travel Finland label will make it easier for travel trade and travellers to recognise a tourism company and destination that takes sustainability seriously. The label is only awarded for those companies and destinations that have undergone the entire Sustainable Travel Finland programme and fulfilled the criteria. The programme includes regular auditing and renewal of the label.
