Kakola was the most famous prison in Finland until 2007. It was designed for long term confinement and all the worst criminals of the country were sent to Kakola for 150 years. During the tour you will get to know the Finnish penal system and hear stories about the infamous inmates and exciting breakouts. You also see pictures of Kakola´s past and future life. The National Board of Antiquities has named Kakolanmäki Hill one of Finland's most important Built Heritage sites. Completed in 1853, the prison building was built using granite taken from Kakolanmäki Hill itself

Opened in Turku in September 2020, Hotel Kakola marks a new brighter chapter in the history of the county prison dating back to 1890. Up until 2007, the cross-shaped building's cells housed prisoners on remand and other detainees, and one of the wings was sectioned off to serve as a women's facility. The central prison next door was reserved for the country's most notorious criminals
