Get to know enchanting Old Rauma, the largest wooden city area in the Nordic countries. Close to Rauma, the Sammallahdenmäki the burial cairn area has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999. One of Alvar Aalto's most prominent works internationally is the The Terraced House in Kauttua. We also visit Alvar Aalto's masterpiece, Villa Mairea. And last but not least the tour ends in Jyväskylä, the capital city of Alvar Aalto's architecture.

Sammallahdenmäki, the burial cairn area dating from the Bronze Age (1500 -500 BC) has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999. The whole ancient relic area contains 36 burial cairns from the Bronze Age and Early Metal Age that spread on ridges and hearh terrain over a distance of one kilometer

Kauttua Ironworks area is one of the most notable sites in the industrial history of Finland. Alvar Aalto designed many buildings for the grounds of the Ruukinpuisto Ironworks. Nowadays the beautiful surroundings of the old Ironworks area function as the stage for events and has restaurants, cafes, art exhibitions and galleries. The Terraced House is a vivid example of the desire of the architect to integrate the building into the natural environment: the multi-storey residential building adapts to the slope, so the entrance of each apartment is on ground level. Completed in 1938, the Terraced House is one of Alvar Aalto's most prominent works also internationally

A short visit to the sawmill museum which includes original machinery from 1880's and beautiful industrial architecture
Makkarakoski Sawmill Museum is located in the heart of the Noormarkku Works. Work at Makkarakoski Sawmill ended in February 1956. The original sawmill machinery mainly from 1880s remained oi its' place. Therefore, the sawmill has kept a piece of the Finnish industrial heritage which has remained untouched for over 60 years. Makkarakoski is a unique example of a life cycle of a sawmill. The equipment which was acquired after the blaze of the sawmill in 1875, originally worked by water power, then by steam power and finally by electric power. The Sawmill is one of its kind in Europe, which serves now as a museum

Villa Mairea was designed by architect Alvar Aalto and completed in 1939. It is one of the most successful examples of the modernist style in architecture and one of Aalto's most widely known designs. The interior design of Villa Mairea was done by architect Aino Aalto. Villa Mairea was constructed for Walter Ahlström's daughter Maire and her husband, general director Harry Gullichsen. Villa Mairea is a work of art in itself and a popular destination for architects from around the world. The interior of the Villa mainly consists of modern art and Artek furniture, which form a rare collection of Finnish and international art and design

After the lunch, we continue to Alvar Aalto’s summer residence – also known as Muuratsalo Experimental House
This unique building that is possible to visit only with a guide, is located on an island five kilometres from Säynätsalo Town Hall. From its courtyard opens an extraordinary view over the Lake Päijänne. No wonder Aalto built the summer residence for his family here!
Transfer to Puolakka for a hike to Struve Geodetic Arc: Oravivuori Arc Point
The point of the Struve Arc Puolakka is located at the top of Oravivuori in Korpilahti. It is the most famous of the Finnish Struve Geodetic arc points, because it is located at the top of a hill and there are beautiful views to the lake Päijänne. On this spot a triangulation tower has been erected to commemorate the importance of the Oravivuori (or Puolakka) measuring station to the mapping of Finland. The Struve Geodetic Arc was accepted into the Unesco World Heritage List in 2005. It represents the cultural heritage of science and technology
