Japan is the world’s third largest economy after US and China. It has a huge home market with a population of 126 million. The export from Finland to Japan has grown during the last years being over 1,2 billion euros in 2017 and the growth has continued in 2018.
EU-Japan Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) is expected to come in place during 2019 and it will remove trade barriers and customs for a wide variety of products, and this may make products previously unattractive in Japanese market competitive. The agreement is going to accelerate and facilitate both export and import as well as investments between the parties. One concrete impact is lowering of export tariffs from EU and Finland to Japan.
One of the leading themes in Japan is circular economy and related bio economy. Japanese markets are huge and developing quickly. Finnish products and solutions have lots of opportunities to access the market. Beyond this Japanese trade houses are looking for partnerships in 3rd countries and investments opportunities as well.
One of the strongholds of Japan is automotive industry and electronics. Due to this fact Japanese are strong global players in the field of battery industry. The world is changing and therefore there is a huge demand for energy storages (electricity) and EV vehicles to mitigate climate change.
Finland and Japan will celebrate the 100th Anniversary of Diplomatic Relations in 2019.
Coinciding with the Team Finland visit to Japan, Slush Tokyo will be held on 22-23 February, 2019, and in addition to that there will be numerous side events.
Slush Tokyo is the ultimate platform for those who wish to enter Japan and those who wish to expand out of it. Organized annually since 2015, Slush Tokyo attracts participants from all over Japan and the world. This year, Slush Tokyo 2018 gathered 6,000 attendees.

To cover the expenses of arranging the visit to Tokyo, Business Finland will charge a participation fee as follows:
- Micro Businesses and SMEs: 2340 EUR + 24% VAT per person
- Major Companies: 2750 EUR + 24% VAT per person
Business Finland will invoice the participation fee after the visit based on the actual costs. The invoiced fee will not exceed the amounts mentioned above. If a person stationed in Japan represents the company, a 25 percent discount will be granted.
