Welcome to join the Team Finland visit to the United Arab Emirates on October 20 - 23, 2019, and explore new business opportunities in the fields of sustainable solutions for energy, water management and smart grids. During the visit, delegates will also attend the Nordic Smart Sustainable Cities conference held in Dubai on the 22nd of October 2019. This Team Finland visit is led by Mr. Petri Peltonen, Under-Secretary of State, Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment.
Opportunities in energy sector digitalisation
According to the UAE’s first unified Energy Strategy, by 2050 UAE is committed to increase the contribution of clean energy in the total energy mix to 50%, to reduce the carbon footprint of power generation by 70% and to increase the consumption efficiency of individuals and corporates by 40%. At the same time, there is a strong annual growth in demand for energy due to the population growth (currently projected at 7-9% per year), increased economic activities and very high consumption rates.
Opportunities in water efficiency
According to UN, the UAE is one of the top 10 most water scarce countries in the world and has one of the highest water usages worldwide per capita. One UAE resident consumes about 550 liters per day, which is more than the global national average of 250 liters per day and 95,5% of the water comes from desalination. This consumption needs to be reduced and the water production diversified. With the UN Development Goals, the UAE is now committed to increase water productivity and reduce water scarcity. Special emphasis is put on reducing the total demand for water, increase reuse of treated wastewater and increasing the national water storage capacity.
Nordic Sustainable Cities conference and WETEX
The Nordic Sustainable Cities conference, jointly organized by Business Finland, Business Sweden, Innovation Norway and Royal Danish Consulate General in Dubai under the umbrella of Nordic Innovation on the sidelines of Wetex – the region’s largest sustainability and renewable technology conference, will highlight Nordic solutions, research, best practices and innovations in e.g. smart grids, water management, wastewater treatment, waste-to-revenue and smart port solutions.
