New network for the development of plastics recycling and bio-based materials under construction

CLIC Innovation Oy has set out to build an ecosystem for developing alternatives to challenging plastics and bio-based plastic replacements. The work is facilitated by Growth Engine funding by Business Finland to help in orchestrating the ecosystem.

The planned 4Recycling ecosystem project is open to all parties interested in the development or commercial potential of solutions for plastics recycling and alternative bio-based materials. If the theme interests you, contact us!

The goal of the project is to form a new, cross-disciplinary Finnish network for the development of plastics recycling and bio-based materials to facilitate global business growth. The key themes of the ecosystem are "design, reduce, reuse, recycle, recover & redesign".

The project is a first step in a cross-disciplinary collaboration that aims to create a sustainable market for carbon-based materials. Business opportunities are sought from both services and the export of new materials and processed and recycled products.

Partners to CLIC Innovation in forming the ecosystem are Business Finland and industry leaders Andritz, BMH Technology, Borealis, Fortum Waste Solutions, Fortum, Kemira, Lassila & Tikanoja, Metsä Fibre, Metsä Board, Metsäliitto Cooperative, Neste, Stora Enso, UPM-Kymmene and Valmet, as well as the Chemical Industry Federation of Finland, Finnish Plastics Industries Federation, and Finnish Forest Industries.

Key aims of the ecosystem project are to:

  • bring together relevant public projects and operators in Finland and build networks with selected international partnerships
  • build a shared vision and roadmap for the development of business and expertise around the theme
  • facilitate cross-disciplinary cooperation and engage in public affairs work to foster a positive operational environment toward sustainable development business and overcome roadblocks
  • plan any industry-university joint projects necessary to fill in gaps in expertise.

Work is currently underway on a large-scale research and development project on plastics recycling, with the next focus set to be on development needs in biocomposites and retail packaging.
