From the beginning of 2020 Business Finland provides funding for material audits. Material audit helps companies to grasp their waste and to find new ways to reduce waste and to utilize production side streams.

Funding will cover 50% of the total cost of the audit project, max € 15,000 per audit. Funding is a grant.

– Material audit suits for all sized companies who want to improve their understanding of the material flows, reduce the carbon footprint and to take concrete actions for the sustainability. Material audits are useful in order to develop more environmentally friendly, innovative and competitive business, says Kati Oikarinen, Advisor at Business Finland.

In material audit a visual material flow model is built. The model shows the value of the flow through and circulating flows of the production. It will be possible to perceive the real product and side-flow costs. Other audit phases include observation, personnel interviews and idea workshops.

Possibility to reduce use of raw materials and waste

In material audit projects it is very normal to find cost saving potential equivalent to at least 3 % of turnover. Apart from the economic savings, it is possible to save the environment by using less raw materials and generating less waste. Material audit is a concrete way to promote circular economy.

Material audits are carried out by material audit experts trained by Motiva.

– An outside expert brings a new development perspective. During the project, the company's own expertise will be fully utilized, too. The best improvement ideas are refined into the results and actions by a team of experts and staff. Participation motivates the staff to continous improvement, Oikarinen adds.

Several material audits can performed in the same company. The audits apply not only to individual companies but also to the groups of companies, such as industrial parks. The scope of the audit may be the whole production, one or more production lines, production process or a single product.

In earlier years, material audits have been funded by the Ministry of Employment and the Economy. Business Finland and Motiva work in close cooperation to develop and promote material audit projects in Finland.
