Finland claims the Leadership in Creativeness, Innovations and Sustainability at SXSW

As a country that continues to define the future, Finland will share world-leading best practices in sustainability, creative arts, new technologies and the keys to happiness during SXSW Online 2021.

Finland is excited to announce to participate in SXSW Online this year, which will take place virtually from March 16-20, 2021. Over the five-day digital event, Finland’s robust schedule will feature keynote panel discussions, conference sessions, live virtual music showcases, film festival screenings, world-class networking, online exhibitions, and more. Here is an overview of Finland’s key topics that will be in the spotlight during SXSW Online.

Finland Leads in Sustainability

Finland is among the most sustainable countries in the world and is committed to become climate-neutral already by 2035. Finland is a leader in sustainable solutions and replacing fossil-based materials with renewable bio-based alternatives. Almost anything made from petroleum can be made from wood – a natural renewable resource.

During SXSW, the Innovative Wood event organized by the Embassy of Finland in Washington DC, the Consulate General of Finland in New York and Business Finland, in collaboration with Finnish companies and research organizations, will showcase innovations from wood-based materials, from medicine to fashion. Finland is proud to collaborate with the US in promoting modern forest bioeconomy and the event includes leaders and researchers from our partner state of Maine. We wish to engage with new partners in the US and globally in the transition to a greener economy.

Finland also continues to guide the world towards a more viable future through holistic green initiatives, such as Sustainable Travel Finland, which provides companies and destinations with a toolkit to embrace eco-friendly tourism.

The Finnish Way of Life

Having been named the Happiest Country in the World for three consecutive years by the World Happiness Report, the balanced Finnish way of life goes beyond responsible practices. Finland invests in knowledge, innovations and people and to help share the country’s work-life balance best practices, Invest in Finland and Talent Boost have made it easy for new businesses to establish operations locally.

At SXSW, Finland will offer a glimpse into the future with a series of panel discussions covering topics such as cybersecurity, quantum computing and the new space economy. Finland is a hot spot for high-tech R&D, both in quality and focus as well as being a gateway to the European market.

Finland Fosters a Diverse Music Scene

One of the must-see events on this year’s calendar will be Music Finland & Genelec’s immersive musical showcase with Finnish artists Antti Paalanen, Yotto and ALMA. In this cross-sector production created by world-renowned creative director Jesse Auersalo, virtual reality meets music, nature and technology.

Nature is an inspiration for Finnish artists, such as ALMA, who will share how the natural surroundings influence her music at Visit Finland’s event during SXSW.

Finland Offers Fresh Content and the Ideal Filming Location

Finland is known for being a trustworthy and transparent partner in audiovisual content and creativeness. Audiovisual Producers Finland & The Finnish Film Foundation and AGMA, Agents and Managers in Creative Industries will be at SXSW to tell what Finland has to offer for film production and what exciting content is on offer.

F*cking with Nobody, a satirical dramedy by Hannaleena Hauru was selected to the Global section of SXSW and will be screened online during the festival. Telling the story of a parody romance created for Instagram, this funny and unique film is just one example of how Finnish cinematic content is also on the rise globally.

Business Finland’s Audiovisual Production Incentive is increasing international interest in Finland as a filming location with its cash rebate for foreign productions, which in turn promotes the development, growth, and internationalization of Finnish companies.

One of the Finland’s SXSW official events presents the Hollywood science-fiction and comedy film Dual, written, produced and directed by Riley Stearns, was filmed entirely in Finland during the COVID-19 pandemic. Like increasingly many movie productions, the Dual team chose Finland as the filming location because of its versatile locations, financial support and other benefits.
