Finland’s 6G Flagship research program offers dynamic collaboration platform

A global pioneer in the development of wireless technologies, Finland is now a forerunner in the deployment of 5G and research into 6G technologies. The 6G Flagship research program led by University of Oulu is open to international companies and provides a valuable collaboration platform for learning about next generation wireless technologies and how to exploit the new business opportunities they offer. The program has options for different levels of collaboration based on companies’ interests and needs.

“6G Flagship welcomes all companies that are interested in next the possibilities of next generation wireless technologies. We offer companies world-class expertise based on a successful tradition of industry collaboration,” says Academy Professor Matti Latva-aho, Director of the 6G Flagship program and one of the world’s top researchers in wireless radio data communications.

University of Oulu has been one of the leaders in wireless communications research for more than three decades. Funded in part by Academy of Finland, the 6G Flagship program has a budget of EUR 251 million (2018–2026) and is operated in collaboration with Nokia, VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland, Aalto University, BusinessOulu, and Oulu University of Applied Sciences.

Wide-ranging collaboration opportunities

6G Flagship is actively involved in the finalisation and deployment of the 5G standard, developing the essential technology components needed for 6G. The research focus areas are wireless connectivity, devices & circuit technology, distributed computing, and services & applications. The program will speed up the digitalisation of society through the introduction of 5G and eventually 6G by implementing and demonstrating targeted vertical applications.

“Collaboration is not only for the ICT companies, but also for the verticals that are exploiting ICT tools. For example, we already have ongoing collaboration in the fields of energy, health, Industry 4.0, logistics, media, smart city development and transport,” says Latva-aho.

Participation in the 6G Flagship ecosystem helps to connect with potential collaboration partners from the company network and also enables access to publicly funded R&D projects in collaboration with 6G Flagship and its partners.

 Ideal location for digital business

The research and development into 5G and 6G technologies are good examples of the world-class spearheads created by the Finnish ICT ecosystem, according to Arto Pussinen, Head of Industry, ICT & Digitalization, Business Finland.

“In addition to telecommunications, 5G and 6G technologies provide an excellent base for growth in IOT, AI and many other service areas. Finland is the ideal location to build your future digital business based on wireless connectivity,” he says.
