More information about the theme of the program

The world is transitioning from fossil-based, centralised and predictable energy markets to renewable, decentralised, intermittent and variable generation. This change requires significant innovations, investments and international cooperation.

Flexibility is an enabler of the new clean energy system. Flexibility in the energy system is needed so that Finland can take advantage of the enormous growth potential based on clean energy production. A flexible energy system adapts to changes, takes uncertainties into account and enables the integration of new solutions. Flexibility promotes the renewal of Finnish industry, improves competitiveness, increases exports and attracts investments to Finland.

Why was the theme chosen?

Finland's long-term competitiveness can be invested in by focusing on solutions that secure the future. The strategies of Finnish companies must adapt to the needs of the future energy transition in order to strengthen Finland's position as a country that attracts energy sector investments and top experts.

The Flexible Energy Systems program focuses on ensuring Finland's competitiveness and export growth through future-oriented innovations. We offer assistance in information gathering on topics such as sustainability, flexibility, regulation and geopolitics. The program monitors the needs of end customers in foreign markets, enables the creation of international innovation and customer relationships, facilitates the development of platforms, and supports the scaling of innovations to the market.

At the heart of the program are:

The program covers solutions that increase flexibility in three different energy sectors: electricity, heating (and cooling) and fuels. These solutions include:

  • Solutions for the integration of irregular and variable power generation
  • Solutions for decarbonisation and electrification of the heating and cooling system
  • Solutions for flexible integration, utilization and distribution of new clean fuels
  • Solutions that connect energy sectors

Business Finland's goal for the program

The Flexible Energy Systems program aims to:

  • Increasing the carbon handprint: The aim of the program is to increase Finland's carbon handprint through solutions that increase the flexibility of energy systems. The program also aims to make sustainable development, flexibility, legislation and geopolitics an increasingly important part of the growth targets of companies in the energy sector.
  • Creating New Business: The programme aims to facilitate the creation of new business through future-oriented innovations by establishing pathways from research to business in collaboration with the Academy of Finland and lead ecosystems.
  • Strengthening Finland's position: The aim is to strengthen Finland's image in the world as a creator of energy system innovations and a sought-after partner through innovations and Finnish references.
