A new 100 MEUR international program, VINES, for advanced next-generation intelligent network systems starts

Business Finland prepares to fund Finnish R&D projects with 10 MEUR. The aim of this US National Science Foundation (NSF) coordinated international VINES program is to gain significant leaps in performance and capabilities of next generation advanced intelligent network systems.

The VINES (Verticals-enabling Intelligent Network Systems) program supports research and technology development to significantly enhance the performance, resilience, and interoperability of future communication and computing networks. The VINES program is a multi-sector collaboration involving U.S. federal agencies such as National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), Office of the Under Secretary of Defense (OUSD), and Department of Homeland Security (DHS), which may co-fund proposals.

The VINES program includes international partners from Finland, India, Japan, and Sweden, enabling bilateral research and innovation collaboration that align with the global vision for secure, open, and resilient 6G networks. In this collaboration Business Finland funds the Finnish participants in technology development, and Research Council of Finland funds the fundamental research.

Systematic long-term Finland-USA cooperation

"Finland has a long and successful science and technology cooperation with the US. VINES is a bold and remarkable endeavor between Finland and the US to build foundation for smart and resilient future. This collaboration will enable company-to-company project funding for the first time in both Finland and in the US. Finland highly values this cooperation and is pleased to see it to continue with the new US administration," says Director General Lassi Noponen from Business Finland.

The VINES program seeks to support both fundamental research and verticals-driven technology development, demonstration, and translation activities that will lead to leaps in performance and capabilities of next generation (NextG) advanced intelligent network systems that span the user-edge-core-cloud continuum.

The deadline for applications is September 25th, 2025. The VINES funding will be applied through Business Finland's Continuous Strategic Partnership Matching Funding Call.
