Business Finland awards Veturi funding to AMD Silo AI to strengthen Finland’s position in the global AI market

Business Finland has awarded 15 million euros in Leading Company (Veturi) funding to AMD Silo AI. Business Finland also commits to funding R&D projects of other companies and research organizations in the collaborative network. This is marking a major national investment to accelerate Finland’s position in the global AI landscape. The five-year initiative, titled Compute to Impact, aims to catalyze AI innovation, talent development, and economic competitiveness by coordinating research, infrastructure, and industry collaboration across the Finnish ecosystem.

Led and coordinated by AMD Silo AI, the project will drive expanded research and development activities in Finland and serve as a cornerstone for bolstering the Finnish AI ecosystem. A key focus will be to build a collaborative network of high-level research organizations and businesses developing and leveraging AI to further top-tier industrial research and improve Finland's competitive edge in AI on a global stage.

Business Finland is committed to developing AI capabilities

"This leading company project is a strategic investment in Finland's competitiveness. Leveraging AI is vital for Finland. Business Finland’s ecosystem model creates jobs that require top expertise, supports exports, and increases productivity across the entire Finnish economy. Thus, this project fortifies the country's position on the global AI stage," says Business Finland Director General Lassi Noponen.

The collaboration between AMD Silo AI and leading industrial companies in developing AI innovations is built on Finland's strengths, such as university research, the LUMI supercomputer, and expertise in AI.

"Business Finland's targeted investment reflects our commitment to developing AI capabilities, which strengthens Finland's innovation ecosystem, enhances our industry's competitiveness, and creates well-being for all Finns," says Noponen.

Compute to impact

Led by AMD Silo AI, the Compute to Impact - project, brings together industry leaders, research institutions and innovative companies to coordinate R&D investments and build advanced AI capabilities in Finland. Engaging with the entire ecosystem enables a full-spectrum approach to R&D.  The project focuses on five core areas: infrastructure development, efficient AI model development, secure multi-tenant computing, novel model architectures, and application deployment. Participating companies and organizations will have dedicated access to computing resources through the LUMI supercomputer, Europes fastest AI computing platform.

“AI requires strategic long-term investments that enable a diversified AI ecosystem. We need to make sure that innovation is not stifled by a lack of access to needed AI infrastructure nor a lack of ambitious projects that attract the best talents. Through this project we will contribute to bringing the AI ecosystem together to learn from each other and foster commercialization of new innovations. Over the next 5 years, the estimated overall R&D impact of this project will be around 100 million euros”, says Peter Sarlin, CEO and co-founder of AMD Silo AI.

The project tackles a critical challenge: while Europe has world-class AI research, converting this into commercial success requires massive computing infrastructure and deep technical expertise typically available only to the largest global companies. With AMD Silo AI's computing platforms and model development expertise, companies are empowered to develop and scale advanced AI solutions efficiently.

Commercial success drives continued investment in shared infrastructure and knowledge development. This initiative ensures Finland captures a significant share of the rapidly growing global AI market while retaining and growing its AI talent base. By creating lasting technical capabilities and collaboration frameworks, this effort positions Finland as Europe's hub for efficient, sovereign AI development that powers the next wave of technological innovation, while aiming to reduce computation energy consumption.
