The United States is the largest and most popular export target for the health technology sector, says Tarja Enala from Business Finland. Although US policy is in a state of flux, cooperation with big players such as the Mayo Clinic, which has been chosen as the best hospital in the world, is seen as worth pursuing.
According to Customs, health technology exports to the United States in 2024 were valued at EUR 856 million. Germany was in second place with 265 million and China in third with 157 million.
“Despite the uncertainty, our customers set their sights first and foremost on the US market. This uncertainty arises from possible tariffs on medical devices or other health products,” says Health 360 Finland Programme Director Tarja Enala from Business Finland. According to Enala, the impacts can be significant and create pressure for businesses to reorganize their supply chains. | ![]() |
On the other hand, Senior Advisor Titta Houni from Business Finland's New York office says that the Trump administration aims to deregulate health technology to promote innovation and efficiency.
“The administration’s key actions include repealing rules it deems unnecessary, speeding up approval processes, promoting remote healthcare and artificial intelligence, and streamlining control structures. This policy supports market access, but naturally also raises concerns about patient safety and data protection,” Houni comments.
AMPlify is a US-based program aimed at especially young, growth-oriented Finnish companies that supports access to the US healthcare market. Through AMPlify, companies can get help with difficulties with regulation, testing, or registration – or aim for long-term partnerships. It has chosen the Mayo Clinic as its partner, which has been voted the best hospital in the world eight times in a row.
“The United States is our most important market, where our current customer base consists primarily of pharmaceutical companies and research organizations. Our next goal is to open the door to the clinical laboratory market for our CE marked kit, which we have just begun manufacturing in California. This is one example of where the cooperation with the Mayo Clinic, visibility, and contacts at events play a key role,” says Jari Närhi, CEO and founder of NADMED Oy. | ![]() |
25 companies participated in the call that ended this spring, 11 of which were selected: Algorithmiq, Arivin Therapeutics, Biohit, Genomill Health, MultivisionDx, NADMED, Orbican, Orcason Medical, Otos Health, SoihtuDTx and Vitalsigns.
Another example of Business Finland's Health 360 Finland program's service regarding the US health sector is the opportunity to participate in the Finland Pavilion at one of the world's most significant health conferences. HLTH USA brings together more than 12,000 experts, investors and policymakers from around the world.
The following companies from Finland will participate in this year’s HLTH USA 2025 health sector event in Las Vegas on October 20-22, 2025: Buddy Healthcare, Business Oulu, CleverHealth Network, Curify Labs, Kiwecare / Smart PD Solutions, Koite Health, Moncyte Health, NADMED, Otos Health, Peilivision, Klinik AI, Soundless and Solid IO.
Kiwecare CEO Juha Remahl believes that the US will remain the main growth area, despite the political climate.
“We are developing a system for real-time, AI-based remote monitoring of peritoneal dialysis and early detection of peritonitis. In the United States, our focus is on understanding national requirements and working with a significant local player. Data-driven patient safety and possible deregulation support our entry to the market.” |
