More information about the theme of the program
Electronics, photonics and, in the future, quantum technology will form an increasingly strong foundation for the modern way of life. These areas of science and technology are also central to the growth of companies, the security of states and the implementation of the green transition. Commercial expectations built around artificial intelligence and the digital reality (metaverse) are driving the development of the industry so that its value is predicted to exceed the USD 1 trillion mark by 2030. This means that the value of the industry will more than double in just six years.
Why was the theme chosen?
Finland has strong expertise in key technologies that enable digitalisation. Our internationally recognized know-how provides an excellent foundation for future growth. In its national strategy ("Chips from the North", published in April 2024), the Finnish Semiconductor Industry Group has estimated that Finland has credible opportunities to triple the industry by 2035.
The purpose of The Chips Campaign program is to support this growth outlook with the help of Business Finland's funding and advisory services. In addition, The Chips Campaign program aims to help Finnish companies, research institutes and universities achieve a central position in the field in Europe.
Background from the EU's perspective
The international value chains of the chip industry are strongly Asian-centric. For this reason, the EU is investing up to €43 billion in the sector through the European Chips Act. The aim is to strengthen Europe's technological leadership in research, development, design and manufacturing, and to return some of the most critical supply chains back to Europe.
The Chips Joint Undertaking (Chips JU) is a key instrument established under the EU's European Chips Act, the purpose of which is to facilitate the strengthening of European value chains. It opens up opportunities for European companies and research institutions to participate in European ecosystems and international value chains. The technical content of Chips JU covers all key technologies enabling digitalization, such as electronics (from microelectronics to power electronics), photonics and quantum technologies.
Business Finland's goal for the programme
Business growth
We support the growth of new business by activating companies and research institutes for R&D-driven development of expertise, products and business. We are particularly interested in projects that are ambitious in their goals and networked in nature. Although we encourage the participants to work closely together within the framework of the project (see e.g. Business Finland's co-innovation funding, ECS Chips through JU or Eureka Xecs), we also support companies in their individual growth efforts.
Opening up new business markets
The program works in cooperation with market experts at the Ministry for Foreign Affairs to open up business opportunities for Finnish companies in the target markets.
Supporting Finland's position as a pioneer in the field
We help foreign companies to establish themselves in Finland. Finland is a particularly attractive place for companies focusing on R&D and advanced manufacturing, as well as for companies willing to cooperate.
