What is ESA?

ESA, the European Space Agency, is an international organisation that promotes cooperation in space research, science and technology. ESA has 22 member countries and develops European satellite-based scientific research and spacecraft technologies. ESA also utilises the expertise of companies in the use of space technology on Earth.

The Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment and Business Finland fund Finland's ESA membership and participation in ESA programmes with approximately EUR 20 million annually. ESA's projects allow companies and research groups to participate in high-quality international cooperation. Finnish technology has been used in several ESA satellites, such as Planck and Galileo.

Who is ESA suitable for?

ESA's projects are suitable for companies that want to expand their expertise and collaborate on European space-related projects. Research institutes are most often involved in ESA projects as partners of companies.

How does ESA work?

ESA procures technologies for the satellites it implements through competitive tendering. In addition to the construction of satellites, ESA funds technology projects that develop, for example, electronic components and systems, software, materials and technologies for telecommunications systems. Some of the projects develop applications for remote sensing, telecommunications and positioning.

ESA projects and programmes

ESA's projects and programmes are long-term, extensive and international. Participation in ESA projects is a merit for the company and a demonstration of the international level of expertise.

Finland participates in the following ESA programmes:

  • Remote sensing software
  • Navigation program
  • telecommunications program
  • Technology Programme
  • Space Science Program

How can I get involved in ESA?

All ESA calls for tenders are published in the EMITS tender database. Companies can participate in projects by responding to ESA's calls for proposals, either individually or as part of a consortium. In technology projects, Finnish companies should submit a call for tenders together with research institutes. Orders for satellite projects are usually carried out by the main contractor company selected for the satellite.
