Healthcare is a Major Source of Climate Emissions: Sustainability is Finland's Next Export Strength

Finnish healthcare stands at the threshold of a new, essential transformation. Sustainability is rapidly becoming the defining question for the entire healthcare sector – and a significant opportunity. Finland now has a chance to emerge as a global leader in exporting sustainable healthcare solutions.

Sustainability Opens Business Opportunities

Healthcare is one of the world's largest sources of climate emissions. Globally, its share of greenhouse gas emissions exceeds that of air travel. If we do not change course, these emissions could triple by 2050. In Finland, social and healthcare services already accounted for as much as 6.5% of national emissions in 2019.

This is not solely about environmental responsibility but also about managing business risks and building new, responsible business models. Those who invest in sustainability today not only meet their obligations but also create competitive advantages in rapidly changing markets.

Nordic Values Give Finland a Head Start

The Nordic countries are globally known for their robust public systems and social responsibility. In Finland, this is particularly evident in the prevention-focused care model, a culture of open collaboration, and advanced healthcare technology.

Finland's strong expertise in digital health, diagnostic and device technologies, as well as research, development, and innovation activities, provides a solid foundation for developing and exporting sustainable solutions. Business Finland's Health 360 program is one of the pathways to bring this potential to the global market.

Three Examples – Three Proof Points

Many Finnish companies have already demonstrated what it means to combine sustainability, innovation, and profitability:

  • Serres is a pioneer in circular economy solutions for operating rooms. The company's Serres Nemo system optimizes fluid disposal and significantly reduces plastic waste – while also saving costs for hospitals.
  • Halton enhances energy efficiency in cleanrooms, which are notoriously high energy consumers. Smart ventilation systems and demand-based controls reduce the carbon footprint in critical healthcare environments.
  • HUS uses its purchasing power responsibly. Environmental certification, human rights requirements, and transparency from suppliers aren't additional demands for HUS – they are strategic tools for transforming markets.

These are not isolated examples; they highlight that sustainable healthcare is both achievable and profitable.

Finland Can Export More Than Just Technology

We should not settle for merely exporting products and devices. Finland's strength lies in systems-level thinking: how to build entire care pathways, supply chains, and infrastructures that are environmentally friendly and efficient. For example, Granlund's energy-efficient design for the Laakso hospital project or telemedicine solutions that reduce the need for travel and hospital visits.

Moreover, Finland can export expertise and models, such as HUS's responsible procurement practices, which serve as a benchmark for other international organizations.

A Call for the Entire Healthcare Sector to Join the Change

To make Finland a leader in sustainable healthcare exports, we need four things:

  1. Continuous RDI (Research, Development, and Innovation) funding to advance sustainable healthcare.
  2. Strengthened collaboration between companies, researchers, hospitals, and decision-makers.
  3. Regulations and incentives that steer towards sustainable choices and accelerate market development.
  4. International visibility and active engagement to ensure Finnish solutions gain recognition and impact globally.

This change will not happen on its own. It requires trailblazers, investments, and courage. But the reward is substantial: export-driven growth, enhanced competitiveness, and a sustainable future – for both people and the planet.

Join us in building the sustainable healthcare of the future and discovering new business opportunities. The best way to start is by following the Health 360 Finland program.
