Southampton is home to Europe’s densest academia-to-industry photonics hub, anchored by the Optoelectronics Research Centre (ORC) and the Cornerstone Photonics Innovation Centre, which offers open-access silicon-photonics pilot lines. These centers lead global research in areas such as silicon photonics, optical fibers, III-V semiconductors, 2D materials and metamaterials. They also collaborate with over 40 companies across sectors like telecommunications, healthcare, aerospace, and defense, offering Finnish companies a direct gateway to high-value industrial partnerships.
