The Team Finland network is organizing a visit to Northern Norway (Narvik and Bodø) on 11–13 June 2025 focusing on energy and logistics hubs and Norwegian preparedness. The visit is led by Mr. Teemu Tanner, Ambassador of Finland to Norway. The activity is part of Business Finland’s Decarbonized Cities program.
Amidst the green transition and emission-reduction ambitions, Norway has become a pioneer in implementing zero-emission solutions for road and maritime transportation, in close connection with low-carbon energy solutions. Such solutions are in the planning or implementation phase in both Narvik and Bodø. In addition, these Northern Norwegian cities are important for regional preparedness due to their geographical location and amenities. Tying these topics together, access to sufficient energy and well-functioning logistical routes are important for the overall Nordic preparedness in case of a crisis.
The goal of logistics preparedness is to secure society's vital transport and logistics services in terms of material and personnel logistics under normal and exceptional conditions, as well as in serious disruptions. The city of Narvik has an important role as a northern logistics hub not just for Norway, but also for Finland both what comes to rail and road connections as well as a receiving seaport for Finland and Sweden in a potential crisis. Narvik plans large future investments both on infrastructure, energy and industry to cater both for resilience and future growth.
The city of Bodø, an important logistics, preparedness and defence hub in Northern Norway, is planning major projects to transform its harbour, airport and urban areas in the coming years. The port of Bodø is being turned into a smart and green energy hub for maritime, road and railroad transportation and industry, serving as a testbed for green logistics and energy innovation. The projects aim at reducing maritime emissions, increasing port capacity and facilitating green transportation based on electricity and hydrogen. In addition, a new airport is being built southwest of the city by 2029/2030. After the completion, a three-square km area of the old airport will be released for city development in the following decades. The new city district, Hernes, will include both industrial, commercial and residential areas, where green business development and innovation are deemed important. Bodø is also the location of one of Norway’s two Rescue Coordination Centres.
Finnish participants are invited to learn, share and seek collaboration with Norwegian stakeholders on the ongoing projects and activities. The program includes site visits to ports, introductions to their operations, energy solutions and logistics projects, and presentations of existing energy production facilities and newer hydrogen and ammonia plant projects, among other topics. The program is built to facilitate networking with local stakeholders throughout the visit, in addition to the evening receptions organized by the Embassy of Finland and Business Finland in each city.
