In a nutshell

  • Business Sweden, Business Finland and Innovation Norway are strengthening the international position of the Nordic countries through their cooperation and creating new business and investment opportunities.
  • Concrete outcomes of the collaboration include the Nordic Battery, Nordic Chip and Nordic Minerals Collaboration initiatives, which reinforce the value chains for batteries, semiconductors and critical minerals and attract investment to the region.
  • The organisations are jointly participating in the Nordic Compass Summit in Gothenburg on 4–5 November, where they will present the results of their collaboration and explore new, strategically important areas for Nordic cooperation.

At a time of growing geopolitical uncertainty and intensifying global competition, Nordic cooperation is becoming increasingly important. Since 2021, Business Sweden, Business Finland and Innovation Norway, with support from Nordic Innovation, have developed a collaborative partnership to strengthen the Nordic region’s international position and create new business and investment opportunities.

“In a world where competition for investment, technology and talent is becoming ever fiercer, we need to think beyond our national markets. The Nordic region offers a unique combination of industrial expertise and innovative strength. By joining forces, we can create opportunities that none of our countries could achieve on its own,” says Jan Larsson, CEO of Business Sweden.

The collaboration has already produced several joint initiatives. Since 2021, the Nordic Battery Collaboration has engaged more than 200 companies and brought together more than 1,200 participants from over 50 countries to strengthen the Nordic battery value chain. The Nordic Chip Collaboration has engaged more than 900 participants to strengthen the region’s position in the semiconductor industry. Through the Nordic Minerals Collaboration, the organizations are also working to attract investment and build more resilient value chains for critical raw minerals.

Our countries have complementary strengths, and together we can offer a more attractive and competitive environment for international companies and investors

These joint initiatives demonstrate how complementary Nordic strengths can create value across national borders.

“Our countries have complementary strengths, and together we can offer a more attractive and competitive environment for international companies and investors.  We see this clearly in areas like energy, critical raw materials and technology, such as semiconductors, where companies’ value chains and investment needs to extend across national borders. By working together, we can increase international visibility and help more Nordic companies grow globally,” says Håkon Haugli, CEO of Innovation Norway.

Nordic Compass brings together leading business representatives, investors and decisionmakers, with a focus on capital markets, deep tech, defence and energy. For the three organisations, the summit is an opportunity to showcase the results of Nordic cooperation and discuss how it can be expanded into other strategically important areas.
“Nordic cooperation is not about replacing our national strengths but about enhancing them. We are already seeing how joint initiatives create new networks, international visibility, and business opportunities. The next step is to build on those experiences,” says Lassi Noponen, CEO of Business Finland
