Nokia today announced the results of its Competitive Edge Leading Company (Veturi) project funded by Business Finland through the Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF), an EU program designed to support countries with their green and digital transitions. The project has strengthened Finland’s position in edge computing and driving innovation.
The research and development of edge computing is of great importance to reduce the energy consumption problems caused by the huge increase in data traffic.
As sensors generate more data, mobile networks face high energy demands and processing burdens. Intelligent edge computing solutions address this by processing data close to the source, offering benefits in energy consumption, latency, resiliency, privacy, and security.
The Competitive Edge project has accelerated R&D investments in Finland by over €230 million, strengthening Finland’s position as a leader in next-generation technology development. The project started in 2022 and ended in December 2024, during which Nokia recruited 205 R&D professionals in Finland.
Together with 233 ecosystem partners, Nokia’s Competitive Edge leading company project involved 18 R&D projects and conducted 14 trials.
“The Competitive Edge project has given a flying start to the further development of challenging edge computing. It has successfully provided solutions to enhance our future capabilities in any data intensive area. The results from the Nokia leading company ecosystem provides good examples on how Finland can lead the way in developing edge computing innovations in sectors such as manufacturing, future cities, healthcare and logistics,” says Business Finland Director General Lassi Noponen.
The Competitive Edge project was aimed at enhancing Finland’s global leadership in edge computing and has fostered innovation and collaboration within Finland’s technology ecosystem, while also contributing significantly to Finland’s sustainability goals.
“Reducing power consumption in digital infrastructure and across industries is essential for both environmental and commercial reasons. It is also crucial to collaborate with top experts to meet the unique needs of industry sectors, data centers, and defense, ensuring robust security, optimized size, weight, and power efficiency, while supporting O-RAN and open, interoperable technologies,” says Tommi Uitto, President of Nokia's Mobile Networks.
The project demonstrated that edge computing, combined with revolutionary new cloud-native capabilities, accelerates industry transformation towards more secure, autonomous, and resilient networks that can support a wide range of new applications and services. For instance, the program gained international recognition for its innovative approach and successfully completed the industry’s first trial of Cloud RAN.
Many of the new capabilities have significantly improved the energy efficiency and reduced carbon emissions across digital infrastructure. The project has advanced new technologies and methods for scaling and operating edge networks, enabling the creation of distributed, automated, and secure cloud-native solutions. This has significantly improved the scalability and performance of digital services, especially those requiring low latency.
