The funding is suitable for companies of all sizes for ambitious R&D projects in which new innovative products, services, production methods or business models are developed to create an international competitive advantage for the company.
-
Pioneering companies
Funding can also be granted to pioneering companies that aim for significant productivity growth and extensive renewal in the internationally competitive domestic market.
Research, development and piloting (R&D funding)
Research, development and piloting funding is intended for innovative companies that seek significant international growth and competitive advantage through research and development. Funding can also be granted to pioneering companies that are aiming for a great leap in productivity growth and system-level renewal in internationally competitive domestic markets.
R&D funding may be suitable for you if:
- you want to significantly renew or develop completely new products, services, production methods or business models to enable international growth and competitiveness
- you want to build new expertise and networks to support international competitive advantage
- You want to verify the functionality of your solution that is close to commercialization in a real environment with the help of a piloting project and get feedback from customers
- As a large company, you want to influence the success of both the company and its networks with the project
- As a pioneering company, you are aiming for a major productivity leap in an industry that is significant for Finland and exposed to international competition
Research and development funding is not suitable for you if it is a question of implementing a ready-made solution, you are only developing small improvements to the current operation, product, service or operating model, and if the project measures are sales, marketing or operational activities.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is research and development (R&D) and what are its characteristics?
Research and development (R&D) is an activity that aims to produce new knowledge, know-how or new solutions. However, not all development is R&D – it can be identified by the following key features:
- Novelty value: The aim of R&D work is always to produce new knowledge or new results. If the work does not aim at this, it is not R&D.
- Creativity: R&D work is creative and innovative. It involves problem formulation and the development and testing of new ideas, concepts, and hypotheses.
- Uncertainty: R&D work involves uncertainty in terms of both the end result and the resources required. If success is a foregone conclusion, it is not R&D.
- Systematic: R&D work is systematic and goal-oriented. It is implemented on budget and its progress is monitored consistently.
- Reproducibility and portability: The results of the R&D work are documented and can be reused, transferred or replicated in other contexts.
What is innovation?
Innovation refers to a new invention, which can be, for example, a product, service or operating method.

- a new product or service that doesn't already exist
- a more efficient way to do the old thing
- Streamlining the process in a new way
- reform that makes our daily lives easier, or
- the result of the development work that improves the competitive advantage.

What makes a good R&D project?
A good R&D project is related to the company's strategy, is based on a real market need, includes new learning and uncertainty, and aims for an internationally scalable competitive advantage. R&D is not a separate technical phase, but a way to develop new business. In addition, the project is systematic and well described, the risk level is justified in relation to the expected return, and includes a preliminary plan
the utilisation and commercialisation of the results and their resourcing, and it will be carried out by a competent team with sufficient capabilities.
