Finland’s future growth opportunities

Over the next decade, Finland's economic growth will rely on grasping significant future growth opportunities related to digitalization, carbon neutral and sustainable energy solutions, comprehensive health and well-being, a zero-waste circular economy, and engaging immersive experiences.

As a small economy, Finland must make important choices to succeed in a highly competitive global market. Instead of waiting for change to happen, Finland should actively influence the desired direction. This is why Business Finland, together with a significant number of stakeholders and a wide range of international experts, worked on identifying the nine most significant future growth opportunities for Finland - for Finnish companies and research institutes to focus on, and Business Finland and other public organizations in Finland to proactively support.

Here are the nine identified growth opportunities, on which the future cornerstones of our economy can be built:

  • Digitalization based boost for productivity
  • Comprehensive health & wellbeing
  • Carbon neutral & resilient energy system
  • Overcoming material related resource challenges
  • Safe & sustainable future nutrition
  • Zero waste & circular economy
  • Life enriching built environments
  • Engaging & immersive experiences
  • Responsible usage of natural resources

By investing in these growth opportunities, we can increase Finland’s competitiveness internationally and make Finland a more attractive country for international travel, talent and investments.

Of the nine growth opportunities identified as significant for Finland, Business Finland has selected five as its own thematic focus areas. Business Finland's thematic focus areas are:

  • Digitalization based boost for productivity
  • Comprehensive health & wellbeing
  • Carbon neutral & resilient energy system
  • Zero waste & circular economy
  • Engaging & immersive experiences

These five focus areas will, in the coming years, be reflected in Business Finland's activities for example in terms of how we direct our programmatic activities, such as programs and campaigns, or allocate our funding. Through these strategic choices and the long-term work based on these, Business Finland wants to make sure that the world-shaking disruptions and related growth opportunities open significant business opportunities for Finnish companies.
